CitationWorks vs Otterly.ai
Two AI visibility trackers, two different bets. Otterly.ai counts prompts across four engines. CitationWorks scores grounded answers and splits them by line of business. Every claim below is read off Otterly's own pricing page and dated.
The short version
Otterly.ai is a mature AI search tracker. It has been around longer than we have, it covers four engines on every plan, and its entry tier is cheap.
We built CitationWorks around a different question.
Not "how often does my brand appear?" but "which part of my business is AI recommending, and which part is it ignoring?"
If you sell one thing, that distinction barely matters. If you sell four, it is the whole story. A contractor can be the first name AI gives for hidden doors and invisible for drywall, and a single blended percentage hides that completely.
Pick us for the second case. Pick Otterly for breadth of engines at a low entry price.
Where we genuinely differ
Lines of business
We generate questions per offering, then report visibility per offering. Your drywall number and your ceilings number are separate numbers, coloured consistently across every page.
Otterly's pricing page describes prompt tracking, a Brand Visibility Index and domain ranking. It does not describe a per-offering breakdown. We have not found one, which is not the same as it not existing, so the table below says so plainly.
Grounded answers, and an honest denominator
Every model we ask is web-grounded. An ungrounded model only knows brands it memorised during training, so it reports zero forever for any small or regional business, and it looks like invisibility when it is really just a measurement artefact.
We also divide by answers we actually scored. A run that failed to evaluate counts as unknown, not as a miss. Plenty of tools quietly count it as a zero and hand you a number that drifts down for no reason.
What Otterly does that we do not
Be honest about this part. Otterly ships ChatGPT Ads tracking, an MCP endpoint, agent analytics and a Looker Studio connector on its paid tiers. We ship none of those today.
Their entry plan is $29/month against our $49. If budget is the binding constraint and one blended visibility number is enough, that is a reasonable place to start.
How to read the table
Every cell in the Otterly column was read off their own pricing page on the date shown, and links back to it.
Where their site does not state something, the cell says "not verified" instead of guessing. That is a gap in what they publish, not a missing feature, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
