What is Topical Authority?
Topical authority is being the site that has genuinely covered a subject: the definitions, the how-tos, the comparisons, the data, the edge cases. Search engines use it to decide who ranks; AI systems reflect it in who gets retrieved and cited when questions in that subject come up.
Why it compounds in AI search
AI retrieval expands one question into many sub-queries. A site with deep topic coverage matches more of those sub-queries, gets pulled into more answers, and becomes a source the model keeps seeing. Each strong page raises the odds for the others. Thin sites with one good page do not get that flywheel.
How to build it honestly
- Map the full question space of your topic and answer it piece by piece
- Add something unique per page: a number, an example, a real prompt
- Interlink related pages so both crawlers and readers can traverse the topic
- Update on a schedule; stale coverage decays
