Write Your llms.txt Once and You Have Already Lost (Part 3 of 3)
Last updated 2026-06-18
An llms.txt is not a one time chore. Sites change, links rot, deploys break things. Treat it like uptime, and connect it to whether AI actually recommends you.

The file everyone forgets
Here is how it usually goes. You write a clean llms.txt. You feel good. You ship it.
Six weeks later marketing relaunches the site. The pricing URL changes. A redeploy drops the file and now it returns a 404. Nobody notices, because nobody owns it.
A guide that points to pages that no longer exist is worse than no guide. You told the model where to look, and you sent it to a dead end.
Treat it like uptime, not like a brochure
You would never publish a status page once and never check it again. Same idea here.
The questions are small and worth asking on a schedule. Is the file still there. Is it still valid. Did the links survive the last deploy. Is the summary still true after you changed your positioning.
None of this is hard. It just needs to happen without a human remembering to do it.
The file is a means, not the goal
Be honest about what llms.txt is. It is a helpful nudge, not a magic ranking. The real question is whether AI actually names you when your buyer asks.
So watch two things at once. Can the models read your site cleanly. And when someone asks for the best option in your category, do you show up, get cited, and get described correctly.
The first is plumbing. The second is the business. llms.txt sits on the plumbing side, which is exactly why it is so easy to ignore until it leaks.
What we do about it
CitationWorks does the boring parts so you do not have to babysit them.
- Checks whether you have an llms.txt and whether it follows the spec: a title, a summary, real links.
- Drafts a correct one for you from your actual pages, ready to copy and host.
- Flags it in your site readiness report so a broken or missing file does not sit there unseen.
- Tracks the thing that pays the bills: whether ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini mention you, cite you, and get your facts right, every day.
The llms.txt is step one. Knowing if it moved the needle is the whole point.
