What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Last updated 2026-06-19
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so an answer engine can pull a clear, direct answer straight out of it. It overlaps heavily with GEO, with more emphasis on the question-and-answer format.
AEO and GEO are close cousins
People use the terms differently. AEO usually points at the format. You write content that answers a specific question cleanly, so a machine can quote it. GEO points at the broader outcome, which is how you get recommended across AI systems.
In practice the teams that do one well tend to do both. Clear answers are easier to cite, and citable content is easier to recommend.
How to write for answer engines
- Lead with the answer, then explain
- Use plain question phrasing as headings
- Keep facts specific and current
- Add structured data so the answer is machine readable
