Build your llms.txt
A title, one sentence about what you do, and links to the pages worth reading. That is the whole file.
One sentence. It becomes the blockquote under the title, and it gets trimmed at 300 characters.
Your file
# Your site
Title only so far. The proposal allows that. Adding links is what makes the file useful to a reader.
Save it as llms.txt and serve it at the root of your domain, next to robots.txt.
This runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.
Five steps
Ten minutes of work, and then the part that actually matters.
Say who you are
Your name goes in the title. One sentence says what you sell and to whom. Skip the adjectives.
List the pages worth reading
Pricing, product, docs, about. Group them under headings. A short description after each link earns its space.
Copy or download
The file builds as you type. Copy it into your editor, or download it and drop it in.
Serve it at the root
It belongs at https://your-domain/llms.txt as plain text. Then check it, because plenty of servers quietly return a web page instead.
Measure the outcome, not the file
Publishing is plumbing. Whether assistants mention you, cite you, and get your facts right is the thing to watch.
What this file does and does not do
Worth being blunt, because the internet is not.
No major AI provider has promised to read llms.txt, and Google has said its Search systems ignore it. Publishing one will not lift your rankings. It is cheap, tidy, and possibly useful, which is a fine reason to do it. It is not a growth strategy.
